Biofuels are compounds which are made from renewable raw materials, such as wheat or rapeseed, and added to conventional fuels. As renewable fuels, biofuels produce environmental benefits over mineral-derived transportation fuels. They help to reduce overall emissions of greenhouse gases and other tail-pipe air pollutants and are a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.
There are two principal types of biofuel: bioalcohols and bio-oils.
Bioalcohols Bioalcohols, such as bioethanol or biobutanol are made from the fermentation of starches or sugars. They are typically blended with petrol but can also be used in diesel blends.
Bio-oils Bio-oils, such as biodiesel, are esters produced from oils such as rapeseed oil or palm oil and are typically added to conventional diesel to produce biodiesel blends.
