Project notes

Now you have read The Story of Sugar, you will have the background information you need to produce a project on sugar or to include in other projects.  For example, diet and health, the New World, or the Great Explorers.

Think about which topics you want to include in your project, then try to find more information on the topics you choose by, for example:
  1. Visiting the local library
  2. Looking through books in the classroom or school library
  3. Reading magazines and newspapers
  4. Asking somebody you know who works in the industry about their work.  For example, ask a factory worker or farmer or even in a shop which sells sugar.

Once your research has been completed, think up headings for different parts of your project and sort the information you have gathered into these areas.

Write an introduction explaining what the project is about and why you have chosen this particular subject. Then use your information to produce your project work.

It is better if you:
  1. Use your own words wherever possible - don't copy directly from books or other sources
  2. Try to interpret the facts you have gathered and comment on what they mean
  3. Remember to illustrate the work with drawings, pictures from magazines, and graphs.
Here are some ideas that could form part of your project:
  1. Draw a map of the Americas and shade in the countries where sugar was being grown soon after Columbus' discovery
  2. Pick out the important dates that relate to the history of sugar in Britain. Design a poster of the history of sugar in Britain, illustrating it with pictures of people through the ages
  3. Using the table in the sugar cane section, draw a bar chart to show how the production of sugar cane is distributed amongst the six main producers
  4. Design a poster to show how we can keep our teeth healthy
  5. Design a wall-chart to show all the ways in which sugar is used
  6. Keep a record of what you eat over one day during the week and one day at the weekend including all snacks. How do they compare? Do you have a balanced diet? If not how you could improve it?
