In December 2008, British Sugar became the first sugar manufacturer to calculate, certify and publish the carbon footprint of our sugar, using the new PAS 2050 method.

PAS 2050 was the world’s first standard for measuring the lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions of goods and services, developed by BSI British Standards and sponsored by the Carbon Trust and DEFRA.

We assisted as a pilot partner in the development of the standard, believing that carbon-footprinting results are most meaningful if manufacturers use a common methodology. We have completed a detailed assessment of each stage of our ‘total supply chain’ and provide customers with independently verified data in support of their own carbon footprinting activities.

British Sugar continues to be committed to reducing our environmental impact. The results of our work with the Carbon Trust will assist us in identifying further areas of focus for improving energy efficiency.
