British Sugar pays about 925 growers supplying beet to the factory about £35 million a year. Around £430,000 is paid in business rates.
Cantley factory employs a permanent workforce of 118 rising to 155 during the processing campaign which lasts, on average, about 155 days. The factory operates 24 hours a day throughout the campaign.
The factory processes in excess of 1.3 million tonnes of beet every year. On average 370 lorry loads are accepted each day. The factory can process up to 10,000 tonnes of beet a day, with an average daily throughput of 9,000 tonnes.
Around 1,200 tonnes of crystal sugar are produced every day. Sugar is stored in six silos, each with a storage capacity of 10,000 tonnes. In addition to the crystal sugar, a further 30,000 tonnes of sugar is produced as a syrup which is further processed throughout the year.
Along with granulated sugar and caster, other speciality sugars are supplied for use as ingredients by the food industry. Granulated sugar is supplied in bulk and in sacks. Caster and the other speciality products are supplied in sacks.
About 80,000 tonnes of sugar beet feed, a high energy animal feed in pellet form, is produced each campaign. This is sold under the Trident Feeds label.
LimeX45 is produced each campaign and sold to farmers to correct acidity, add nutrients, and improve the structure of the soil. Topsoil is also produced for farmers to enrich soil quality on farm and for use in the building industry.
The factory can provide all its own electricity with a generating capacity of 13Mw. Daily fuel requirements during the campaign include 120 tonnes of heavy fuel oil and 150 tonnes of coal.
