Talented Derby girl wins Student Baker of the Year 2006

Eileen Goodrick from Shipley, Derbyshire was crowned Student Baker of the Year 2006 at The Baking Industry Awards gala dinner held in London at The Grosvenor Hotel on Monday, 18th September.

British Sugar, sponsors of the Student Baker of the Year category, presented twenty one year-old Eileen with a trophy and a £500 cheque at the prestigious event hosted by Radio 2 presenter, Jeremy Vine.

Scott Liddle, British Sugar’s head of bakery, said: “We are delighted to see such an enthusiastic and talented baker win this year’s competition.  We wish Eileen the very best of luck and are sure she will have a great future ahead of her in the bakery sector.  New talent is vital to this industry, which is why we decided to sponsor the Student Baker of the Year”.

Eileen won the award after impressing the judges with her selection of baked products. She presented these at an assessment day held at British Sugar in July along with 8 other entrants. Chris Foxall from Dudley and Craig Brown from Forres were the other two finalists, who each received a trophy and framed certificate on the night.

Having heard about the awards through word of mouth, Eileen was determined to enter. During the baking assessment she said she was most proud of her children’s birthday sponge cake, which was coated with British Sugar’s Celebration icing and had a duck pond theme with ducks carefully handcrafted out of marzipan.

Eileen, the daughter of a baker, is currently undertaking a bakery course at Tameside College in Manchester, having already achieved a chef’s qualification NVQ1 and 2 in food preparation and cooking from Clarendon College in Nottingham. She has also worked as a pastry chef at the Marriot Hotel in Derby.
