Icecraft Trophy Winner is Crowned in Live Showdown!

Year long search for Champion Cake Decorator concluded at Cake International 2008, NEC Birmingham.

British Sugar, Knightsbridge PME and International Craft & Hobby Fair Ltd (ICHF) hosted the National Final of the Icecraft Trophy at the Cake International Show held at the NEC, Birmingham this weekend, crowning Tal Tsafrir as 2008’s most talented Cake Decorator!

Tal from Nesher, Israel, an amateur cake decorator, won the £500 prize for her Fairy Cake, having decorated it in 3 hours in front of a live audience using British Sugar’s Icecraft Sugarpaste.

The competition included cake decorators from the UK, Ireland and Israel, who were judged on their creativity, workmanship, composition, presentation and working practices. Chosen for their expertise in the Sugarcraft Industry, the judges included the famous Patissier and Chocolatier John Slattery, Brian Taylor, Chairman of Judges for Cake International, Sheila Lampkin, Show Co-ordinator for Cake International, Sue McMahon, Cookery Editor of Woman's Weekly magazine, Valerie Hedgethorne, President of the British Sugarcraft Guild 2004-2006 and Sue Callaghan from British Sugar.

The Icecraft Trophy was held over the last 12 months and gave entrants total creative freedom to design and decorate the cake of their dreams using British Sugar’s Icecraft Sugarpaste. Entrants were asked in November 2007 to submit a photograph of a decorated cake, which they recreated in the Live Semi Finals in July. At the final, competitors had to design and decorate an entirely new cake.

Sue Callaghan, British Sugar’s Technical Support Manager said: ‘This live competition was an exciting arena to demonstrate the versatility of British Sugar’s Icecraft Sugarpaste. I have marvelled at the creativity demonstrated at all levels of the competition and look forward to more talented cake decorators showing us their skills next year in 2009 .’

David Bennett, Managing Director of ICHF Ltd said: ‘It was very exciting to see the decorated cakes emerge within three hours in the Live Final at our Cake International Show. We congratulate Tal for winning the 2008 Icecraft Trophy.’
