In the UK, greenhouse gas emissions are caused by many different activities:

  • Heating our homes and workplaces
  • Powering industry
  • Transporting goods
  • Transporting ourselves for work or leisure
  • Refining fossil fuels
  • Adding fertilizer to crops

Efforts are being made to reduce the emissions generated by these activities.  Industry is working to reduce the energy required in its production processes.  In our homes, we are using low energy light bulbs and reducing our energy requirements by insulating our buildings. Motor manufacturers have been working to reduce the emissions made by cars by installing catalytic converters.

However, there are more cars on the road every day and our average annual mileage is increasing.  The net result is that the transport sector is the only sector in which emissions are steadily and significantly increasing.
